Here’s a question about sciatica pain I recently received from the Ask The Back Pain Expert survey.

Hi Malton, I suddenly developed severe sciatic pain on Tuesday morning – normally, I am fit and healthy, run about 10km a couple of times a week, and go to the gym regularly – my exercise routine is at least 4 times a week. I watched a few of the free videos you sent me, along with some of those on your website, performed the exercises that were recommended for sciatic pain, and felt relief. I am doing these exercises for the last few days, and the pain is getting much, much better. My only question is, I hope I get better from here on, is there anything else I need to do.

Answer:
Great question. Just goes to show you that even healthy people are susceptible to developing sciatic pain. While the exercises on my videos will usually be enough to get you “over the hump”, keep in mind that there are very likely other things that need to be addressed so that you can avoid problems in the future. Often times these problems are subtle and may, in fact, be related to issues far removed from the pain source. These issues may include faulty foot mechanics, leg length discrepancies, and other biomechanical abnormalities. So to get the result you’re looking for I will need more detailed information from you. I would then be able to piece together the appropriate program for you.

Sciatica pain, low back pain, and problems related to herniated discs can be effectively treated without surgery or costly visits to health care practitioners. The key to successful treatment of sciatica pain is uncovering the underlying cause of the problem. Once the problem is determined, the appropriate intervention can be utilized and the desired result obtained.

Do you know any exercises for piriformis syndrome? Or any ways to get relief?

    Thanks,
    Traci
