Selecting the best back pain treatment for your condition can be an exercise in futility.
In the United States alone, patients with low back pain can choose from a seemingly endless array different health care and non helath care practitioners ranging from their family physician to faith healers. And, among these specialties, there are some 200 different treatment options ranging from surgery, to low back exercises, to body casting, to taking herb supplements.
Yet, despite the many health care choices available to low back pain sufferers, the persistence of chronic low back pain is indicative of a lack of long term benefit for any of these treatment approaches.
Cost for these “ineffective” treatments doesn’t seem to be a concern. Americans reportedly spend between $12.2 and $90.6 billion annually. That’s comparable to the annual revenues of large corporations such as Toy R Us ($12.2 billion) and Home Depot ($90.8 billion).
In a recent paper published in The Spine Journal, the authors suggest that selecting a treatment for chronic low back pain is akin to shopping in a foreign supermarket without understanding the product labels.
