Question:
Malton: My spine has a tilt to the left, yet the xrays don’t show anything significant. I believe it is posture and flexibility related. I do have pain sometimes, but not severe. My pain is pretty much muscle spasms of varying severity. Over the years, I have had good success in managing my back pain through the teachings of Dr. Sarno. I truly can see an increase and decrease in back pain right along the stress and anger levels of my life. My question is: How do I fix this misalignment that has my hips and shoulders our of whack? Stretching? If so which ones? Exercise? Again which ones? Thanks! Dan
Answer:
Dan,
Thought I’d respond personally to your question.
First of all, sounds to me as if your issue is related to one of the syndromes I describe in my videos that you may or may not have seen.
If I were guessing, I’d say that you probably have a combination of 2, maybe 3, of the syndromes - which is typically the case, by the way.
To fix the problem for good (assuming of course there is no other medical reason for the condition), I would have you go through the following steps:
- Analyze your medical history looking for possible clues of a source for your problem. If I thought I could help you, I would tell your right then. If not I’d point you to someone who could.
- If I could help you (and 90% of the people I see I can help), I would then analyze your structure looking for correlating factors that would lead me to a specific diagnosis (one, or a combination of, the 4 back pain syndromes I describe in the videos.
- Once the diagnosis is made, I would then provide you with the most effective exercise prescription for your particular condition. Your program is modified accordingly until the desired outcome is acheived.
- I would also provide you with the most appropriate educational materials so that you stay well informed and can make better lifestyle choices that would protect your back in the future.
- Finally, I would avail myself to you so that if you do run into a snag down the road, I’m there to assist you.
Dan, that’s the process I would use to fix your problem. It is, in fact, the very process I use in the Erase Your Back Pain program.
The key is to identify the cause of the problem and then fix it. If you try and treat the symptoms only, you’ll end up being very frustrated and even, sometimes, depressed.
Hope that helps.
Malton

hi, i’m a high school track athlete and its been a year and some months now since i’ve been having discomfort in the right side of my back, but there’s really no pain and i’m having weakness in my right leg. sometimes my inner right leg hamstring will swell up,also my left shoulder seems higher then my right and its been effecting my running alot and i was hoping u’ll be able to help.
I have a bulging disk in my low back and your exercises have helped me greatly. I recently started having occasional burning
pain in my left hand. If I sleep on my left shoulder at night it will
go numb and hurt and usualy wake me up at night. My therapist
seems to think my left shoulder is causing the pain in my left
hand and not my spine. Could I get your opinion and possible
treatment suggestions? Thanks
