"Back pain treatment ranges from the ultra scientific to the totally outrageous. But, in my experience, there are two types of back pain treatments in this world, those with loaded guns and those that dig…
OK, Malton, what does a spaghetti western have to do with back pain? And my answer is what was written on rock that identified the grave in which the $200,000 in gold was buried.
You see, to really make a difference in the quality of someone’s life, you’ve got to know where the gold is buried. With back pain, the gold relates to the cause of the problem. In other words, if you know the reason why your back is hurting, you can fix the problem and you can fix it fast.
Rusty Moore of the Fitness Black Book wrote a 3 part series on back pain that I thought really makes my point. You can read about it here ==> Conquering Low Back Pain While Getting Fit.
First, let me congratulate Rusty for a very nice article. As Clint Eastwood would say, “bravo”.
In the series, Rusty goes into how he hurt his back, the wrong exercises to do, and finally a description of the “right” back pain exercises to do. Much of his recovery he attributes to the work of Stuart McGill {who I know nothing about} and 3 core back pain relief exercises that are described in part 3 of his article. And, like I said earlier, bravo to Rusty for sharing this important info with everyone.
As a back pain specialist who has treated in excess of 30,000 patients over the course of 25 years, the problem I have with Rusty’s advice is that it’s “over the counter” and assumes that everyone has the same problem and that these 3 exercises will help everyone with back pain. My friend, if it were that simple, I would be out of a job.
Here are my thoughts…
First, I’ve been hearing for 25 years that to prevent back problems you need to avoid bending forward. And, for most of those 25 years, I’ve been teaching just the opposite. Now, I’m not talking about video 3 in Part II of Rusty’s article (the advice in that video is just plain stupid and does very little to effectively stretch the hamstrings). No, what I’m talking about is functional movement. Our bodies are designed to move (in all directions) and I encourage it.
Secondly, the 3 back pain relief exercises Rusty described, while good, may not be the right exercises for your condition. In fact, these exercises could be just the opposite exercises for what you need and, therefore, could create more problems. The key to effectively treat back pain is to identify the underlying cause of the problem and address the problem with a prescription of the best back pain relief exercises for that condition. Anything less than this approach is basically a “crap shoot”.
You don’t have to “dig” to find the back pain relief “gold”. The Erase Your Back Pain program is the “loaded gun” you need to find the “gold” fast. You can read all about it here ==> No More Back Pain!
I look forward to hearing your comments and answering your questions. Let me hear from you.
