The results indicated that at one year follow up, there were virtually no differences between the two groups. These results suggest that spontaneous healing does occur in patients suffering with sciatica due to a herniated disc.

In deciding on surgical versus nonsurgical treatment of back pain, patients should base their decision on severity of symptoms and a willingness to wait on spontaneous recovery. Obviously if the patient is unable to work or care for themselves, surgery is always a good option.
